A sinkhole along U.S. Route 30 in Canton has closed some eastbound lanes of the highway and the Interstate 77 northbound ramp to eastbound U.S. 30. Crews hope to have two of the four eastbound lanes restored by the end of the week.

CANTON – An exit ramp and three of the four eastbound lanes on U.S. Route 30 between Market and Cherry avenues remain closed after a sinkhole appeared along the highway on Friday.

Assistant City Engineer Nick Loukas said the sinkhole, which measures 3 to 4 feet in diameter and a foot deep, likely was caused by the construction to install a sewer line.

“Over the next few days, they will be able to do some work to stabilize everything to make sure the road is going to hold up and not have any further sinking,” Loukas said.

He said crews hope to reopen one of the eastbound lanes by the end of the week. The other two lanes and the Interstate 77 northbound ramp to eastbound U.S. 30 will remain closed – possibly for another month – while crews complete the sewer line project.

Motorists heading west on Route 30 are not impacted.

No official detour has been posted. Loukas recommends that motorists take Route 30 West and exit at Raff Road and then get back on the highway to go east on Route 30.
